1. Consistency, the arrow always points to the front of the aircraft.
2. The "compass" is always pointing forward, never backward signifying NWA's commitment to the future and moving ahead.

My flight tracker widget shows flight information from around the world. The widget is standard on Mac OS X 10.4.

It's not as detailed a most, but does give you a lot of info, including position, speed, altitude, departure and arrival times.

This, frankly, is not a surprise to me. I think had <acronym title="Northwest Airlines (USA)">NW</acronym> gotten wage concessions earlier on in the game, rather that waiting they may have been in better shape.
