Out of curiosity, if the mechanics have to spend a few days on the island to fix the plane, what services are available for them? I'm guessing there's not much in the way of hotels and restaurants on the island. Are they stuck sleeping in the business class seats and eating whatever they can find i...

That is assuming that there is some sort of chain-of-command structure within the Taliban leadership. With the prize being accessibility to previously 'hard to get' weapons, i suspect factions will start breaking out within the organisation, then we're in real trouble. SOFIA was proposed for the ax in Trumps 2021 and Biden's 2022 budget proposals... this might just be gamesmanship for Germany to pay more, or take it over entirely. If the JWST happens, I guess it's a definite second fiddle. It's expensive, but Congress has been consistent in liking it.

The Asiana 777 crash at SFO slammed into the sea wall. Did a mid air flip and came to rest intact except for a separation of the tail section. 330 rotation, not a flip. Also it sounds like every part of the plane that hit the seawall, the MLG and tail-- broke off. (MLG as designed.) Hard to compare...

Why Boeing is so far behind the curve (i.e. asking for TIA when their systems are not mature enough to support that) is a mystery to me. Again, the contracts were signed ~2014 and EIS was supposed to be ~2019. Here we are in 2021 and we're now reading that EIS in 2023 is no longer likely. So, did B...
