Probably a weather diversion - the fact that they loaded enough contingency fuel to circle KHE for a while and then return all the way back to IST means that the risk of diversion was known before departure..

Africa is long, thin routes from the US, and the airports that are likely needing to be served already are. UA's Star partners on the African continent are Egyptair and South African Airways. SA has the daily nonstop on JFK-JNB and Egyptair flies from JFK to CAI and will soon start IAD-CAI as well....

I'd say that Flight Path Park at YVR is one of my favorite places to spot. It has cute mini-runways which light up at night. A must-visit for any avgeek.

All the airlines with 787s have left the aircraft in their schedule past a certain date. As the date approaches, they will sub another aircraft if they need to.
