It's usually dealt with common sense. No different than the long-haulers which have to divert to a very sparsely populated location in Russia on a regular basis or the well documented cases which had to divert to Iran. Good question. Only Saudia bought it? The 797 isn't green lighted yet and I would be very cautious to say it will be. Bread and butters are called 737s and A32x series, not risky clean sheet designs. "Regional" by Chinese standards should mean feeder flights of less than 3/4 hours, I think...

It might explain the unusual vectors somewhat, but for those not in the know, the area around Lisbon can get surprisingly hilly, especially the north bank of the Tagus, as with Lisbon itself. On my recent intra-european flights, single engine taxi in and out is becoming quite routine, almost a non-event. Much more frequent than say 5 or 10 years ago. I suppose cost and environmental considerations have a much bigger say than before.

The point about the possibility of being a mini EK is a valid one though.. LIS is indeed a strategic location and it's a pity they do not take more advantages out of it. On the other hand, Portugal is not the UAE and there are more differences that may explain that. TP in the US is really surprising...

You are correct. The problem at LIS is space, and more specifically aircraft parking spaces.

It's almost a miracle the airport handles 26 million pax in such a tight environment.
