From what I read in the magazines, the C-Series is aiming on the 110-140 seats market for short-medium haul (1-3 hours) high frequency flights, so it's a A320/B737NG competitor in terms of capacity, but not in terms of the mission flown, since the A320s and B737NGs are catered more for longer routes...

Actually per capacity basis, the proposed B717-300 is competing with B737-700. The now in production B717-200 is competing with B737-600.

AirTran bough the B73G because of the proposed B713 doesn't have the range that they want..
