It's not the cost--it's the potential lost revenue. But given the Iceland air service market these days probably it's just as good for loss avoidance. FI will get its first B737 MAX7 in Q1 2018. They will get 3 in 2018 and 6 in 2019.

The flight will leave KEF at 17:15LT as FI873 and arrive in Dallas at 20:40LT.
FI872 leave Dallas at 17:00LT and arrive in KEF 06:00LT+1

This has been on their scope for some quiet time. It is really interesting to see that they will operate its B757 on this route rather than their B767.

FI already flew 6X per week from PDX this summer, so that's not new. Maybe they meant daily in 2018? At least with Air Berlin cutting all international routes from TXL, KEF can become a transfer hub to North America. It already is. You know that FI has a big route map in EUR and transit time in KEF is maximum 2 hours. Very convenient for pax to stop in KEF rather in, for example, LHR. FI connections don't do anything for most travelers in IND considering most of their connections can be made from a US hub(JFK,ORD,e.t.c), sure...

Air Berlin flies from TXL, not SXF. Right city, wrong airport. Eventually, when BER opens on the SXF site, that might have changed. Won't now, of course, Yes of course. My mistakes! But as I mentioned before FI does not fly to Berlin and B737MAX would be perfect fit to fly both to DUS and SXF/TXL.
