The reason that the 747 feels so smoothe on landing is that the air under the plane acts as padding when it lands due to it's extreme mass. Many have refered to it as landing on "a pillow."

In the case of the QANTAS 747-438 that flew non-stop from LHR to SYD, it was towed onto the runway center line. They had to conserve soooo much fuel, that the whole journey was played out on the luck of the winds.
