If nothing else, time . Smisek made a ungodly mess out of UA. Their routes were cut, the product is hands down the worst on the market and lots of high value customers left. Its going to take time to recover from that. Agree with everything you said besides the product being the worst in the market...

Yes I think it is very much possible they will take more 77W's. They can be especially useful at EWR where increasing frequency isn't possible.
