Why Does ATC Tower Refer To Airliners As "Company"

Just curious. When I listen to ATC Ground/Tower, I often hear the controller refer to the other plane as for example, "The Company 737". Why would they not refer to the other plane as the Southwest 737?

I watched "Executive Decision" and I couldn't believe that there is that much empty space above the cabin. Thanks for all of the replies; I am glad I joined Airliners.Net.
