Not sure that TK will hurt as much. They still carry quite a bit of traffic from North America to Israel, and presumably some from Israel to Europe. EK will not compete for those passengers. With LY's Europe network, theoretically yes. But with LY's prices, I don't see it becoming a very popular option unless you're rich and for some reason want service that is substandard to what you'd get on SQ, EK etc etc.

Weird about those footrests - I just did QF1 and there were definitely none in my row (on the lower deck) - also all the seat around us were broken in that you had to bash the button several times to get the seat to 'hold' and not fall all the way back. From what I heard in Uzbekistan last year from travellers who'd dashed across Turkmenistan from Iran, it is indeed desperately poor, with legions of old ladies sweeping empty 8 lane highways etc.

2007 doesn't seem like that long ago - but there you have SQ 747s and even a QF 747-300!

One minor correction: Virgin Blue started flying in early 2000, I think, a year or so before Ansett collapsed.

Also worth noting that casinos are illegal in Israel. I know (from friends) that a lot of Israelis seek out casinos when on holiday. I can imagine this selling well as part of holiday packages etc. As someone else has pointed out, I'm interested to know how LY's on-ground security will work for this...

Wouldn't MEL and to a lesser extent SYD be up there? I don't have any statistics to hand but Australia's domestic services are typically more point-to-point than connecting, and the only significant flow of international transfer pax would be from NZ or Pacific islands, you'd think.

Great report, the minute details of your seating companions are weirdly engrossing.

The breakfast out of Karachi looks great, why were you not a fan? In general the food on Turkish looks way above average in Y.
