Cathay: agree with your observation.
Qantas: IMO centering is fine and similar to the accepted shot. I've seen accepted photos which are much higher in frame. Hopefully one of the screeners can give some clarification.

How about actually adding vignetting to photos that have "reverse vignetting"? Just curious if that would work :) (I don't have any wide-angle lenses so I can't try it out myself).

Heathaze: bottom of the front fuselage, although it might be an optical illusion caused by the severe heathaze on the runway behind the aircraft. Re: Pre-screening please

It's been said several times here that the method you described is not how centering is done.... it should be done to make the image look balanced, top and bottom. In this case the dark tress at the bottom of the frame add visual weight and offset the aircraft being slightly high of center. I agree...

How exactly does one come to the conclusion that the first (Polar 747) is high in frame? distance from the top of the image till the top of the airframe (i.e. cockpit) is much smaller than the distance from the bottom of the image till the bottom of the airframe (i.e. tail). Somehow how I sense the expectation that the screening process needs to be perfect, each time, all the time. That is not realistic. Well, if you replace the words "screening process" by the words "photo editing process" , you will get a sense of the photographers' POV ;). Anyway...
