Re: San Diego Thread - 2018

If I'm remembering correctly, the lounge will be on the third level above gates 46 and 47. It'll be west facing. Good for sunsets but less good for observing what's going on at the other terminals or on the runway. That's unfortunate. I can see even that going away once the westernmost few gates ar...

Re: San Diego Thread - 2018

Slight change of subject: who knows, maybe someday the airport will build some sort of observation deck/viewing platform somewhere on the roof of one of the terminals for folks like us to watch the airside activities from outdoors, and from above! On that note, the Board signed a lease with TAV-Ame...

Re: San Diego Thread - 2018

AA890 and WN2178 are expected to arrive past 12am tonight per FlightAware. I'm curious as to what the status of the runway refurbishment is currently, as I thought there was a 12-5am hard closure through the end of the year.

Re: What's happening lately at SAN?

How feasible are Australia flights? We have quite a larger influx of Australian holiday workers and tourists all the time. I think a 787 might be the right fit for SAN. Wouldn't an airside shuttle take up an entire gate for each part of T1? I'm not sure WN would even have room to be able to do that.

Currently you have to walk outside the building entirely. My understanding is that the terminals will be linked airside once T1's rebuilt, or at least that's what I remember anyway.

Re: What's happening lately at SAN?

There are not enough gates in T2W to handle all of the planned international flights. I believe only four gates are connected to FIS. There will be a gate shortage when T2E gets demolished. Who owns all of the hangars over by the Commuter Terminal? The FIS move and rebuild is a 2-part project. Part...

Alaska runs a couple of redeyes from SAN IIRC so probably them, using one of their 737s. Not sure when the demolition will happen though but it probably won't be that quickly.

Doesn't look like this has been mentioned yet, but the FAA officially changed SAN over to the new approach/departure procedures as part of the NextGen project. Oh I agree with you 100% - one day Miramar WILL be the airport for San Diego. I just drove up I-15 past it and all those bare, undeveloped hills to the east are a dead giveaway! Great news for those airports, but I can't help but feel this is just papering over the real issues with the US immigration system that make clearing it within the US itself a hassle. Extending preclearance to more airports may be the best solution given current realities though.
