ASA 164 SEA to PDX delay today - 5/27/2021

My wife was on this flight today. They pushed off on time but then waited for 50 minutes before taking off. The captain came on and said the delay was due to construction at PDX and there was only 1 runway available. She said he sounded like he didn't believe this explanation but had to say it. It w...

Plan to go to Mars in 1966

I found this link in a mars form and it is pretty fascination. Man, the ambition of the 50's, 60's space engineers was pretty amazing. I know they tested a nuclear rocket so maybe it was for this trip. https://arstechnica.com/science/2012/04/nasas-1966-plan-for-a-mission-to-mars/?itm_source=parsely-...

It is awesome. I went back and watched again in several areas. The right side showing the mission control seating area and highlighting who was talking was pretty cool. Amazing planning and teamwork.

Re: Nimitz Class vs Gerald R Ford Class

Reducing 600 sailors to run the ship is pretty significant cost reduction over the life of the ship. From wiki:

"Systems that reduce crew workload have allowed the ship’s company on Ford-class carriers to total only 2,600 sailors, about 600 fewer than a Nimitz-class flattop."

Re: North Korea and nukes

I think a preemptive, night time, strike of several EMP cruise missiles (like Boeing's Champ") would possibly render NK useless for a while.

The US response could be: "What? Your communications systems are out? What happened? We have know idea what happened".

Re: all Pluto data downloaded from New Horizons

Sadly, this was my wheelhouse in the 80's. Sending data over SLOOOWWWW links with processors that we thought were fast fast the time (Z80, 8088, 68000, ...). So, I was kind of surprised that this milestone was reached. After some help from Google it looks like there was 50GB +/- of data sent over 15...

Re: Sorry Elon, You're Not Going to Colonize Planets

I grew up watching the Apollo missions as a kid and have since studied everything I could. I love someone having goals and vision. But, as everyone knows, the risks are crazy. I've read the book "Failure is not an Option" and just watched the History Channel show on this (again). What a gr...

Re: Asking to raise/lower window shades

I just flew KE20 then KE19 and they strictly enforced closing the shades then opening them for landing. It made me wonder why they would do this unless it was to help make it easier to sleep with the darker light level.

Is everyone in the back strapped in? Being inverted with all of the gear/weapons and ammo sounds crazy.

This is pretty good stuff. I've been in the world of "data chirping" for a long time and have been interested in what is going on with the engine messages. Does anyone know how much and how often they engine will upload? I see the triggers may upload on demand. I'm assuming this is using a data pipe...
