Re: LAT/LONG - The most preferred unit used by USAF aviation?

Targeting is whole world of its own. It’s three dimensional for starters, not just last-long but height above the ellipsoid. If you’re attacking a building and the strike has to be aimed at the 6 th floor, for example. Then, there’s time on target. The A-10 NAV system could use either coordinate sys...

If I could leave at 1600 to arrive on the east coast at midnight, I’d think it better than leaving at 2200 to arrive at 0600; no hotel room, wait around for things to open up.

Re: Willing to spend four hours on hold? NYT on airline res service experience

The biggest problem for airlines is lack of availability. Flights are full so it's hard to find rebooking options. Very true; when flights are already full, it's not uncommon for IRROPS to result in customers having to be rebooked not just the next day, but possibly multiple days later due to extre...

The record of criminal recidivism says you’re wrong. You're not wrong on the facts, but I disagree as to the implications. People are different. Some don't need to fear punishment to behave legally/civilly. Others (the recidivists) will regularly-behave in an illegal/antisocial way, regardless of a...

Look at UA under the pilot-driven ESOP plan. Pilots “bought” the airline then squeezed it so hard they put the business they theoretically owned in bankruptcy. Rick Dubinsky, look him up and his idea of squeezing the golden goose.

Remember, under the RLA, the NMB a government body subject to political power, has to let airline workers strike. That’s half the reason for no strikes, plus the periodic meltdowns caused by recession, 9/11, SARS, etc. ALPA gets great contracts in good times and gives a lot back in bad times.

One of the biggest factor in aviation, especially GA, is that of scale. High cost barriers due to safety certification spread over small production runs mean high unit costs. Proven technology wins over innovation. Add in large legacy installed base and new designs face a high wall.

The model has been out of service for a very long time, what’s the interest here? Take-off performance is not merely thrust-weight ratios. High thrust, given the airframe, means higher Vmcg and Vmca, which in turn could mean longer take-off run and different climb gradient. It’s not unusual for dera...
