From long experience, regardless of stated qualifications, almost anything on technical details of aviation is written by untutored, UN experienced writers. The Middle Seat column in WSJ was fine for passenger perspectives, Sully and Nance are fine, but sometimes shaped by their media outlets.

TLA is a FDR recorded input, so it means something. As a pilot, I have a feel for what throttle position equates to a given setting in a rough estimate, but, no, I don’t think it’s linear.

A hugely expensive-to-operate plane on routes that are very price sensitive—I don’t think so. Additionally, it’s rapidly becoming an orphan making it even more expensive. Every spare, every rotable, every bit of engineering is unique to type and hence priced to market.

With charging times, how many legs a day will Cape Air fly per tail? ASMs will drive the costs. They’ll have to get 8 flights a day or more for it to start being reasonable.

Radio altimeters are simple yet precise devices that work without external infrastructure or databases. They're relatively immune to environmental influences and don't need recalibration in-flight. No, just need to get the plane tracking straight. I was considering manual braking, RTO function will do its job while you do yours. If there’s an RTO function, it almost certainly has auto spoilers, the pilot is just backing up the auto function.

Airplanes are flown with pressures applied with fingertips, not fists slamming controls around, that’s the difference. As the throttles are retarded, the handling pilot has to remove the rudder to avoid swerving into the applied rudder that isn’t opposing thrust any longer. It’s a coordinated action...

I usually try for a connection with enough time for a bite in a sit down terminal restaurant—not a bag takeaway affair. I’m not eating my lap, dragging food onto the plane—déclassé. An overnight flight, even business class, I get dinner prior to boarding.

In those days, fatigue wasn’t considered a factor—you just flew the schedule. As late as the ‘80s, a reserve pilot was on call 24 hours a day. A few changes came from it—notify ATC of equipment failures, slow to holding speed 3 minutes prior to the fix.

Almost a jet, thoroughly cocked up by the crew. Herks do windmilling engine starts and 3-engine take-offs, so hard to understand. Windmilling start involves high speed taxi to windmill start one engine, essentially a 3-engine take-off that doesn’t fly. Certainly, “go oriented”.
