Since retrofitting sharklets on the A32x seemed to be a trend when announced, I'm surprised to see there are still many planes of the family flying without them.

Was it a cost-related thing or was there a technical issue with those frames?

It is a niche airplane. I never saw too many airlines ordering it once it was announced because, back then, there weren't that many ULR routes that required it. But I don't see it as a failure. Most (All?) airlines that ordered it are still operating it. It allowed EK to go deeper into South America...
