That would be a great 2nd lens for you, offering reach you would be happy to have. It looks like it does autofocus on the D40. My first telephoto lens was the 55-200mm and I had always wished I had gotten a 70-300mm.

I would recommend the Nikkor 12-24mmf/4, @ 12 mm it's very sharp and has little distortion. A little more expensive than the 10-24mm but a bit better build to it, which comes in handy when banging one around in the small confines of a cockpit
