Wasn't Delta first with Basic Economy - then American/United? In either case - whether it's Basic Economy or another fare class - you can book whatever you like that's available. It's there because people are buying it. Though I think at times they don't realize what they're buying.

I believe it's the 77A (domestic V3?) - where they cram 3-4-3 in coach, and 2-4-2 up front - is what they're flying to Hawaii. Not the most comfortable bird in the sky.

I grew up in Hartford CT (BDL) - I miss the sounds of Allegheny CV-580s, Eastern L-188 Electras on the ramp and taking off .. I think they were both powered by Allison engines ..

It varies differently by airline. Some US airlines will accept a UM only on nonstop flights, some as long as there isn't more than 1 connection. And they charge more than $60. It's definately not for free.

It happened multiple times on the Eastern Air-Shuttle from LGA to BOS/DCA in the 60s/70s. The guarantee was - you show up before departure time and you get a seat. It was great PR when someone would show up, the plane scheduled for the flight was full - and they would indeed roll-out one of the back...
