It didn't use to be like this, it has changed recently. Basically to reserve a seat you need to be Gold status, First Class or on a full fare ticket. This wasn't popular with the guys over at Flyertalk...

As with the old CW layout, if you are in a middle/window seat and the person who is sitting in the seat which provides yoru exit has fully reclined and put the foot stool up, you need to climb over their feet.
