1175 could not have survived if they were much more than 200 miles from HNL according to what I’ve heard. The main problems were vibration and drag from the damaged engine. Surely windmilling. The fuel would have been cut off a while ago. Flames are from friction.

Does it look like another Southwest 1380-style accident? If so, then they are lucky as it could have resulted in injuries and even fatalities WN1380 was an absolute freak accident - there have been a number of fan blade incidents before and since, and none have ever led to the exact separation need...

Our fleet rarely had early morning arrivals but on the rare occasions we might have been curfewed, I’d delay launch, or slow down with the FMC programmed arrival time function (the term for which escapes me). This is why I thought there might have been some issue on the ground.

thats the definitive answer I was hoping for.

To take it a step further, fuel periodically gets into contact with wing exterior surfaces anyway (leaking access panel, over-wing fuelling etc.). So why is fuel on the trailing edge such a no-no?

Correct, Flaps 5 is pretty streamlined. However, the restriction is dumping with the flaps in transit, as there's a transient buffet as the flap goes through the mid part of the extension or retraction.
