Also America West experimented with a couple of 747s (-200s I believe) in the early 90s, offering flights to Japan (i forgot which city). It would sure be interesting to see a 747 in HP's new livery.

I also wondered why they didn't take 2 744's instead of 2 742's.

i believe it's because at the time the govt bought AF One the 744s were very new and had not been around long enough to prove its reliablity
