The 26 October edition of the Charleston, SC "Post and Courier" has a story about the sole overnight controller being caught sleeping in the tower while on duty. Supposedly, no flights affected. Link here: <a href="http://www.charleston.net/assets...

Jump to postNever understood failing an inspection. No matter the service, or level of inspection.
Standards are published, you know what you need to do... whether it's your uniform, weapon, or unit (ship, too), then you know what you have to do.
How do you fail?
I remember friends telling me about the inprocessing briefing and being given the expected Life Expectancy of the base they'd be going to. Surprising how some were measured in minutes... Frightening that some were measured in seconds. True speedbump, I guess. Wonder how our forces would make out if ...

Jump to postIt's true. I left my job under USERRA to enlist active duty in the Army. At the end of your enlistment (for whatever term the initial length is), and as long as you leave under non-dishonorable conditions, you can request your job back. Jump to postI'll hazard a guess... perhaps for security? (stop laughing) We all know the scene in Airport where the bomber is following along on the map. Well, what about modern days where a evil-doer is wanting to affect a certain city? If they don't show where the big name ones are, then evil-doer can't get h...
Jump to postTab A into Slot B... wow, putting these things together is lots of fun.
Wonder how it looks all taken apart. Any pics?
Fail-Safe is sad, yet... noble in its own way.
By Dawn's Early Light is similar in its feeling... and frustration and futility.
Dr. Strangelove is more comical...
I've always been a bit of a space history nut, and the beginnings of the US programs are truly fascinating. I read books on that like a sponge.
Often, I hear that the "Right Stuff" has a lot of inaccuracies, but few people detail them.
So, my question is this: What's inaccurate?

What's a fundamental part of flying? Whether you're a pilot, mechanic, whatever? Checklist. Even works if you're... say... a software developer. Airports loaded? Check. PAX getting on planes? Check. Program runs more than 1Q without crashing? Hmmm, maybe we'd better check again.

Good thing they offer a forum for the customers to get together and share their experiences (good and bad). Two part question (and no, didn't find anything on search): 1) What do the SCA's do when they're not carrying the shuttles (which seems to be a lot lately)? I can imagine that maintenance on non-flying birds can become prohibitive, but... what else are they good for? 2) Related... when the shuttles ...

Jump to postDon't forget sending birds ahead for trips. So, he'd need a few out at a time. I imagine that for a multi-leg trip, he'd need two sets of birds (call it set of 4, three to fly, 1 spare for maintenance), and they'd leap-frog ahead of each stop. Plus, as birds go into phase, etc, they're taken down......

Jump to postIt's been awhile since my community has had a major car accident. And by major, I mean one where at least a family has been wiped out.
I've always been taken by the aviation community's morbid fascination in tracking time between accidents.
It seems hard to believe that the shuttle and Saturn V have such comparable noise levels (only 1 decibel difference). Having witnessed 10+ launches of the shuttle, I always thought the Saturn V would have been much more impressive and eardrum shattering. I've always been disappointed not to have had...
