The pavement strength on the main bit of runway would I guess need to be stronger to withstand the hit of a landing aircraft so I am guessing it is a cost saving issue, given that most aircraft can be landed and stopped inside half the distance of the runway’s 14,500ft.

LGW could exclusively be served with the 787-9 and 787-10. The latter has range with full payload up to around 10 hours or 5000mi so will be fine for all the US and Caribbean destinations. They managed to extend the piers to accomodate EMAS so surely it would not be beyond the wit of man to extend them further to get the runways up to say 8,000ft. The extra 1000ft would not need a weight rating for touchdown so wouldn't require the strength of the original extensions.

They had a big central USA hub at IAH and if you look at the two locations there are far more communities in that area than at DEN to provide feed. There is very little from DEN in a big arc from SLC to ORD/STL with any sizeable population so I am not surprised a two-airline hub at DEN didn't work.

Basically the aircraft has to accelerate to V1, lose one engine, become airborne and clear a 35ft obstacle however, the airborne part does not have to be over paved surface. I solved the 2006 CRJ crash in Lexington, KY from my armchair in Leicester, UK whilst watching the news report showing pictures of the aftermath and street signs, a quick search of which on google maps confirming that they had taken off on the wrong runway.

From the horses mouth (a BA 747 captain) MTOW from 09 on a 60F day is 320t. Approx 70t fuel meaning that there is around 65t availavle for payload. This would allow the aircraft to go with a full pax load and maybe 15 LD3s (out of 30).

BMI's aircraft are relatively cheap as they came as part of the sale deal so there are no lease charges to pay. This saves around £8-10 per seat assuming six sectors per day. At an average age of 17, maintenance costs will be creeping up and sooner or later the airline will need to find replacements.

EWR is a Star Alliance hub, whilst BA is One World so very little connectivity. 2x daily on sub-250 seater has remained to serve local market on that side of town, (plus offering more connectiivity onto Europe via LHR than Star can now that BMI is gone).

My advice having worked for over 20 years in commercial aviation and knowing operating costs of running an airline backwards is as follows:

1) if you have less than $25m that you are willing to wave goodbye to then don't evn think about it
2) if you have more than $25m then invest it in property.
