In the 14 flights I've had on China Eastern I've smelled cigarette smoke on every one of the transpac flights. I think the flight attendants do a bit of smoking too because I can sometimes smell it on them toward the end of the flight. But the fares are great...

I haven't flown either, but I live near SFO where there are quite a few UA 787 flights.The A350 does seem slightly more exotic at the moment.

Looking at flights between HAN-SGN on VN, they fly a mix of A321, A350, and 788s. Which would you fly and why? I'll be traveling in Y and all of the flights are roughly the same price.

It's actually to reduce the amount of direct light (heat) that enters the terminal through the windows. This means less air conditioning needed, and an overall environmentally friendlier building. It's one of the ways the renovated SFO T2 achieved LEED Gold certification.
