You were upgraded because the account holder has a Chase credit card with United. This allows reward tickets booked by that account holder (regardless of who they are for) to be eligible for upgrades.

The operator doesn't matter anymore on these routes, as they're part of the revenue sharing agreement. All members benefit equally, regardless of operator. It's very possible that you'll see some adjustments in the airline operating individual transatlantic routes going forward.

Maybe it's just me but the text under the DL logo "Force for..." looks oversharpened to me, also the end of the wing, towards the wingtip.

When you use a credit card at one of these kiosks it's nothing to do with the card used to make the purchase, at least on the ones I've used - it's just for name verification. It should be no issue for her to use her card to pull up her reservation and get the boarding pass.

One important consideration is the visa process. You have to go through a series of checks with the Dept of Homeland Security, and I believe enter the US on a student visa, to take flying lessons. It's not a simple (or cheap) process...
