Long-Haul Narrowbodies

Why hasn't Airbus or Boeing developed a long-haul narrowbody to assist airlines in developing routes that either can only be scheduled non-daily or arn't feasible at all with current fleet options?

I know Boeing has the optional 739 with extra fuel tanks but what about a refitted 757 or A321?
