Regarding the tailcone: In the BBC footage, the escape from the plane is played twice, and especially in the second time round, you can clearly see it being jettisoned, and hanging. The video stops at that point. Lots of people are already fleeing at that point - I doubt the exit was therefore used...

I've done a trip or two in KLM's 777s. It's not all that bad, the 10 abreast, especially with IFE in economy. I've had worse experiences with airlines with no IFE onn long flights...

The rates are seperated out for 'nationals' - anyone who has a work permit / permanent visa and 'tourists'. De tourist rate is quite a bit more than the other rate. Ok, so I've only had an aborted takeoff once, and it was due to birds (not an actual strike though). So why did they abort? Do we know? I'm not completely sure, but there's no way that plane was taxiing with 4 blown tires, the tires burst due to the braking, right?

Ethiopian Airlines could probably setup you up with a pretty cheap flight and an interesting stopover in Addis Abeba.  Smile You'd have to fly to one of their european destinations though (Rome, Paris, Amsterdam, etc.)

BTW, you aren't legally allowed to smoke in Holland in public places either... Officially the deal is that everyone must agree to certain closed areas must be 'smoking places', i.e in workplaces. Schiphol seems to have gotten around that by just putting up little smoking areas...
