Fireball Over Phoenix Last Night Around 11:10PM

Got a call from my wife - she was on a field trip to the PHX zoo with our son. She said she saw what looked like a fireball/meteor - bright with some debris coming off, around 11:10PM last night. Did anyone els...

RE: Initial Climb Angle Of The Airbus A380

One of the reasons the A380 has a smaller noise footprint than the 747 is because it can outclimb the 747. Of course it also has larger, slower turning fans which also contributes to its smaller noise footprint.

RE: POLL: Is 9/11 The Root Cause Of Industry Probl

9/11 did not cause the current problems. Bad management and labor practices are solely to blame (much like the car industry where every effort is made to maximize profit extraction at the expense of customer base). High fuel costs only worsened an already spiraling industry. Give people a reason to ...

Okay, so a plane sitting at the end of the runway fully loaded weighs X. It starts its takeoff roll, and the wings generate lift. At the point of rotation, how much weight (in terms of 1/n X) is there likely to be? At at rotation, does the effective weight on the main wheels increase, or decrease? I...

Uscg HH-60 Jayhawk On "Deadliest Catch"

Last night's DC featured the sinking of the FV Katmai. The show suggested the Jayhawk flew 900 miles in 7.5 hours straight, but this doesn't seem to make sense. The Jayhawk was dispatched from Kodiak which is even further away. I presume it did the task in a series of hops that were edited out. Does...

RE: What Makes Engine Sounds Unique?

Interesting question. We have a good mix of 737's and comparable Airbii fly over on approach, and the general difference between the Boeing's and Airbii is very apparent. 737 on approach has more of a roar while the Airbii generally have more of a whine/scream. I haven't paid attention to the differ...

Quirkiest Quirk About Airliners?

Of all the airliners through the ages, what's the quirkiest quirk of any of them? For example, the Trident had an offset nose gear that closed sideways, and main gear that rotated 90 degrees to fit the main wells. But that's a minor design "quirk" if it even qualifies. Although not an airliner, the ...

One of the largest (if not the largest) contributor to the "man-made" global warming account is land-use change, and one of the most damaging forms of land-use change is planting for biofuels.
