There are some other requirements as well.
A pilot can’t carry any passengers unless they have logged 3 landings in category and class within the previous 90 days.
All jets require a type rating.
Anything over 12,500lbs generally require a type rating.
Sailplanes are a different category.
On Canadair regional jets you can access the aft cargo bin thru the aft lav. Though you need tools to remove the access panel to gain access to the cargo compartment.Jump to post
My question is why aren't they using simulators in Europe? The fidelity of modern full motion sims is so good that the lag is imperceptible. They work extraordinarily well for pilot training. Twice I've been on flights where it was the FO's first time actually flying the plane. Smooth as silk. ther...Jump to post
Given the exorbitant costs to park a car for passengers at airports. how does it work for employees? Are employee parking lots generally free or do they attract hefty costs for employees? Is there are general rule or does it depend on the type of employer and aspects such as availability of public ...Jump to post
The MEL will state whether an item may be deferred by the crew instead of maintenance. If it is crew deferrable there will be a maintenance procedure that will be outlined for the crew to perform. After the procedure is complete the PIC still needs to coordinate with maintenance and complete the pap...Jump to post
There is an overweight landing procedure that you follow if you have to land over structural MLW. There may be other factors that reduce your MLW below your structural MLW, but after an overweight landing, you just make a logbook entry and maintenance does their thing.Jump to post
The airline didn’t purposely move people, but crew bases opened and closed all of the time depending on the EAS contracts that were awarded to the airline and so virtually all of the movements are due to base openings and closings. As bases open, people voluntarily move their base there or if there ...Jump to post
My first airline had no overnights. The number the controller gives you is not a personal cell phone number?
The last time a controller told me to copy a number I thought she wanted to talk to me....
Nope it was the NTSB who wanted to talk to me. They had been trying to track me down for a few hours.
Most airlines, captains are not qualified to operate as FO unless they also have a right seat qualification. Check airmen have a right seat qualification so can operate in the captain seat or the first officer seat. If the check airman is conducting training with a captain, then the check airman is ...Jump to post
From what I understand while working during the Envoy approval process, the FAA FSDO responsible for the mountain region would rather not have commercial operations at ASE and “wished the airport didn’t exist,” due to the performance requirements.Jump to post
Then in that case, it looks like some mainline operator will need to either: Expand/relax scope to allow Skywest to operate a larger aircraft or Take delivery of an aircraft that can operate into ASE and get FAA approval to operate it into ASE. So looks like maybe not Skywest then, but Delta willing...Jump to post
There’s only one commercial operator currently flying into ASE. All of the United, American and former Delta flights are operated by Skywest. Republic (Q400s) and Envoy (CRJ-700) used to operate into ASE, but no longer do. Unless something changes, once the CRJ-700 goes away there will be no commerc...Jump to post
carrier aircraft unlike commercial airliners and general aviation, during approach and landing don't fly airspeed - Vref or anything like that. instead they fly AoA using the indexer that is a prominent instrument just to the left of the HUD. they're just looking for a circle that says they're "...Jump to post
JFK holds aircraft at the gate during peak traffic. I don’t know if it’s an airport thing or if it’s an airline thing... if you’re on the American ramp at T8 and you’re scheduled to push during the peak traffic, you call for push and ramp gives you an estimated push time and you get to hold on the g...Jump to post
I’m not sure how CPDLC works/ if the text messages are going directly between the flight crew and the ATC controller But when doing it via voice on HF. The controllers and flight crews aren’t talking directly with each other. Instead there is an intermediary ARINC radio operator that relays messages...Jump to post
The thing that bothers me with the RNAV arrivals is that the landing runway changes the lateral track that is flown and sometimes the vertical descent profile. The enroute controller at center tells us to descend via. So we ask what runway? Don’t know the approach controller will tell you. Contact a...Jump to post

I’ve only done cat iii in the simulator. I’m not focused on looking outside at any point during the approach and landing. I’m monitoring FMA. I don’t know what their certification process is for the operator. None of the regional airlines I flew for were authorized for RNAV(RNP) and the LCC I fly for isn’t authorized for them either. We have RNAV visuals that make things easy like the Expressway Visual into LGA. The 7s and 19s for LAS. Th...Jump to post
Every time I’ve been given a RVR below minimums and I’ve declined the approach clearance, the controller has always asked “what are your minimums?” We tell them, and the controller has always responded, “oh looks like RVR’s come up. I find that my “worst” landings are on calm windless days when the ride during approach is smooth. Those landings tend to be “firm” or who taught you how to land? on days where it’s gusty and I’m constantly having to correct for gusts and I’m wiggling and nudging the side stick constantly, the appro...Jump to post
The only operator that I know of that secures engine(s) inflight is the military. p-3 crews will routinely secure an engine to extend on station patrol time.
airlines do not secure engines inflight unless it’s an emergency.
The only way to know the actual RVR is to look at the RVR reading in the tower and for the flight crew to ask the tower. The only requirement is that at the final approach fix, the visibility has to be at or above minimums. If so, the approach may be continued. When I was a new crewmember, I kept mo...Jump to post
Even in VMC weather every approach and landing is an “instrument” approach. When cleared for the visual approach. With how GPS is interconnected with the avionics these days, it is quite annoying that not having GPS causes annoying issues. the plane still flies without GPS and reverts to other means to maintain the GPIRS position. The airplane never decides. As you’ve discovered - there are three parts to Cat III ILS approaches - the runway, the airplane and the crew. The military doesn’t use jet a. The army and Air Force use JP-8/F34 as part of the DoD single fuel concept. the navy uses JP5/F44 for its aircraft afloat due to its higher flashpoint, with its ships using NATO F76, using JP5 if F76 is not available. It all depends on the airline. A 737 captain going to 777 captain is not upgrading - he is transitioning. upgrading is going from first officer to captain. Pay depends on the pilot contract - but typically while in training, a 737 captain transitioning to 777 captain continues to receive 737 captain...Jump to post
