they are called diesel electric locomotives. the diesel motor isn't connected direct to the transmission. And this is has been this way for over 30 years. Back to the article...the only route on which LATAM and Delta both fly is GRU-JFK. No overlap elsewhere. However, I could see in a JV LATAM ceding some flying to Delta, possibly MIA to secondary Brazil (where LATAM would fly a narrow-body today) as well as to MCO...with DL ending GRU-JFK on its own...

AA is dominant in GRU and EZE market, but UA has a very clever fleet utilization in these routes, changing gauge all the time optimizing loads and yield.
