Southwest performs well with certain business travelers in certain markets. In STL for example, the prospect of getting stuck in ORD is enough to steer many business travelers to WN. Here in MSP, WN just doesn't have a chance, there is just too much business travel to destinations like Fargo, Sioux ...

You are right, SEA is currently showing as 3.9m MSA, my error.
Jump to postThis subject of the DL Hubs has been beaten to death, but here is a quick synopsis: Delta has two strategies that have been long-standing, their "Not-Chicago" strategy and their "Atlanta to the World" strategy. DL believes it's better to own MSP/DTW (which have better cold weathe...
Jump to postFor quite a long time AA offered one of the first departures from MSP in the AM, 5:00 AM MSP-ORD. It was a somewhat difficult flight to make because TSA only opens here at 4AM and many "nervous nellies" who are are on 6:00 "sun flights" line up extra early and clog up the works. ...
Jump to postTo add to my original comment regarding cargo. Because Ecuador doesn't have a free trade agreement with the US (and Colombia does) a large percentage of Ecuador's export cargo goes to BOG/MDE first.

I've flown most of LATAM's (Former TAP/Lan Chile) routings through Miami over the years as well as most of AA's South American offerings. I noticed that quite a significant amount of traffic was transiting to Chicago, especially from EZE, mostly to ORD (but i really have no idea as UA/AA don't serve...

A few notes on the above thread: AZUL does a better job at capturing Brazilian POS than the American carriers, except for perhaps American. They also tend to have a lower cost base and can capture VFR traffic that might find UA/DL unaffordable. Boston and NYC/EWR have very different Portuguese deman...
Jump to postWhat percentage of Hawaiian's revenue come from non-USA/inter-island operations? To me it seems they are uniquely positioned to capture Asia/Pacific/Australian business that AS and WN cannot touch.

Thanks for the answer everyone, it seems that any Skyteam traffic out of South America beyond GRU will just get routed via AF/KL versus adding a VS flight.
Adam
Curious, I recently flew VS for the first time now that they are a more integrated partner of DL's, great flights all around. What is the reason, or history, as to why VS didn't offer flights to South America until recently, and only GRU? Given the volume of tourism to BsAs, it would seem to make se...
Jump to postWith the MAX situation, this makes perfect sense...1 772 replaces 2 MAXs. Premium product for high demand routes.

I hope the A321XLR is utilized for the thin MIA-South America routes that recently got 737MAX'ed...it sounds like a much better plane for these routes.
Adam
From a climate standpoint, DFW is much more secure than Houston, as Chicago-MSP-Denver are much more secure than SF/LA or NYC. Who knows, someday the biggest cities in the United States might no longer be on the coasts.
Adam
The leakage goes both ways. When I lived in Central NJ and needed a cheap domestic flight, I frequently went south to PHL. Likewise, when I needed a cheap International flight, I would usually end up at JFK. PHL has an amazing number of destinations that it in no way could support on O&D alone, ...
Jump to postI transited the CLE Cleveland hub a few times in the 2000's. At the time they had their Beechcraft hub operating. Jump to postI rode onboard A340-600 G-VWIN operating as VS 138 last week, returning on VS27 operated by a 747-400 G-VROY. The A340-600 was actually a substitute for the A330 I was booked on. Enjoyed the opportunity to fly on it. Seats were a bit uncomfortable and the AVOD was limited but overall enjoyed the sho...
Jump to postRather than start a new thread, I had a question. Would it be feasible to build a 777-9/10 Combi? After riding in the KLM 747-400M, i see the value in the added freight capacity. This could increase the customer base of the 777-9 and create a mid-tier freighter between the 747-8 and 777 cargo.

OneWorld doesn't have a non-stop option to South Africa, so I would imagine a lot of Americans use BA to LHR and then down, it also allows Americans to go straight to CPT as there has been excessive fear communicated to them about JNB. I also think for many tourists the idea of breaking up the trip ...
Jump to postFares have been heavily depressed recently on USA-CPT. SAA has the market in the NYC and Dc Metro. ATL has a JNB nonstop. AA on a 789 MIA-CPT/JNB may (emphasis on May!) work. Jump to postA friend and I are on KLM611 next month AMS-ORD in the 747M. It was my understanding this route was too switch to the 789, but is staying 747 for the time being due to cargo volume. Perhaps this is actually related to the widebody shortage?
Adam
Hopefully they upgrade or retire these 767s soon! I go to MVD all the time and fly LAN now instead of nonstop from MIA from MVD. Those planes are outdated and uncomfortable for the fares charged. Also, the soft product is awful compared to LAN in both classes. American def. needs to improve its ser...
Jump to postNewark is such an odd special case. Its a gem of a hub, surrounded by a port, a garbage transfer station and misc industry, but beyond that are some of wealthiest suburbs in the United States and an easy transfer to NYC via Amtrak/NJT.
Adam
I wouldn't be shocked to see the 332s eventually migrate to MIA, with PHL TATL becoming all 788 and 772. The relatively low J seat count and lower capital cost compared to a brand new 787 make them well suited to the LatAm market IMHO. Honestly, that isn't a bad idea. Its essentially what DL is doi...
Jump to postWith the imminent retirement of the AA 763 fleet on the horizon, is there any risk of the destinations they serve being canceled once the 763 is retired? Brazil and Argentina's economies aren't doing so hot right now so that could be part of it. Since the SCL flight routes through Brazil, it would also be affected by any deterioration in that market. Jump to postI am a bit concerned that PVG-MSP is the carrot that DL will use to move HND to another airport. The route just isn't performing all that well and was handed to DL at MSP versus AA. Jump to postDoes the A321LR have the same ETOPS rules/regulations as the A330-200? Jump to postI would argue SEA should be compared to BOS, not to MSP. MSP without DL hub would otherwise be similar to STL. An A321ULR would be a much better plane for this type of route. Perhaps laid out like the A321T's minus the First Class section. Jump to postThe AA 763's didn't have to be as rough as they are, they are just fairly early builds compared to other carriers and AA waited way to long to invest in them due to the bankruptcy. Jump to postI know this is all a pipe dream, but you could make a case for a 4-way combination of SY/B6/AS and HA.
