Re: Atlas Air 747-8 - Engine fire, returns to MIA

I’ve seen a photo of the #2 engine and it has a hole about 10 inches in diameter blown out of the cowling of the jet exhaust nozzle at the 2 o’clock position (near the high pressure bleed)

1. Yes a pan pan pan is warranted but not a mayday
2. Probably not as they were only flying to SJU and well below max landing weight.

Re: Air Cargo Discussion - 2024

Interesting observation I made today - UPS didn’t run any of their regional night sorts last night. Everything funneled through SDF. It wasn’t that long ago that was fairly unthinkable. Really goes to show how much spare capacity there is in the network. MLK day was always a slight volume decrease....

Re: FedEx 757 lands at Chattanooga, TN Airport with landing gear failure

On the ATC tapes, the crew said they were talking with Dispatch, specifically on where to take it, but they landed at KCHA with one hour of fuel. I find it hard to believe that dispatch didn't phone-patch them to MX control and that MX control didn't ask them to verify no CB's were popped, which is...

If it's so easy to snag a bag/item of clothing/accidentally kick the CB, why didn't Boeing put a protective cover over the whole board or easier still, move it slightly upwards from the floor? That C829 breaker in position A1 fed power to all of the other A row and B row circuit breakers on that panel, none of which provided any indication to the pilots that they were unpowered. I remember seeing an interview with the FedEx boss a few years ago, where the journalist asked him if he was worried about the growth of Amazon's competing airline. Nope, no need to worry.
