Re: SLS / Orion - Tests, Launches, & Developments

I heard on a webcast recently that rolling the assembly back and forth between the pad and the VAB actually put quite a bit of stress on the vehicle. More so on fact than the pressure and temperature cycling of the rocket during tests and WDRs. I wonder if that's true, and why that would be. It's n...

How "waterproof" (for lack of a better term) is the insulation on the tank? Would sustained wind-driven rain, even if not up to tropical storm standards, cause issues?

If this effort does go bust fast, and AA/UA did in fact commit hard cash to this, I do wonder if both company's boards will take a serious look at the decision making here. 1. Any "hard cash" commitment is a rounding error to a company of AA/UA's size. 2. A "nonrefundable" depos...

My hunch is that if Boom can build and fly their demonstrator, they will be bought out by a bigger manufacturer to carry the project to completion. Somebody on Twitter made a similar point - Boom needs at least $8B in capital if it is going to be taken seriously, but then again, the CSeries/A220 wa...

Was on an AA 737-8 and it only took 15 minutes to unload all passengers. Only 15 minutes? That seems rather excessive to me. I would be annoyed if leaving a Boeing 737 would take that long. I don't recommend you ever fly on a 757-300. I was in the second-to-last row one time - 40 minutes to get off...

Veering a bit off topic since it's more about the building and financing of a US railroad: I enjoyed Nothing Like It In the World by Stephen Ambrose, about the construction of the US transcontinental railroad in the 1860s. Very little to do with the actual operation/driving of the trains, but an int...

I don't see how the hearings themselves could be any more political theater than they are now. The part that could get even nastier (and lead to delays and/or an 8 member court) is the made-up McConnell "rules" that nominees by the other party won't even be considered if it's "too clo...
