At this point, most "classic" 777's are probably too close to retirement for the expense of installing and certifying a winglet...

I dont think the "classic" 777's will stick around as long as the older and smaller 767's due to the A359 or 78X being almost direct replacements.

I have a hard time seeing the 789's having the endurance to fly these routes without a major payload restriction. EWR-SIN is already one of the longest flights in the world, IAD would be even further and I'm not sure United has the appetite to do it. As for TPE, I would imagine it would be difficult to do without Russian overflight. The SIN-EWR uses tailwinds across the pacific and tailwinds across the Atlanti...

One interesting possibility is IAH-LAD without the Houston Express, I'm sure an oil company would be willing to shell out some big bucks for a 3x weekly scheduled charter again but this time on a network carrier. Connections are sure to be marathon like with the monorail being positioned on the north side of the terminal complex. The original subway is before security and the cars are small. With the 789 being pushed to its limits by UA (SFO/LAX-SIN, IAH-SYD), NZ (JFK-AKL), QF(PER-LHR) any sort of MTOW increase and/or efficiency gains would be very welcome... With UA having +100 789/78X in the order books making the "ER", the new model base makes alot of sense IMO...similar to...

UA has pretty much used the 78X as a 789 sub in nearly every situation as they have flown LAX-SYD, EWR-JNB etc...all they do is block seats down to the 789's capacity. I cant imagine the 78X being SFO/LAX-SIN capable though economically... IIRC, this was a similar situation to the 77W and the 77L......

I would be really surprised if UA hasnt at least investigated how to make EWR-SIN work with the B789, even with a payload penalties... The pilots pulled the power back on the engine on the side that had damage because they were surging, and they were getting fire alarms for those engines...Given the information that they had, pulling the power back on those engines is pretty much the only option...because of the asymmetrical thrust...

Do we know if they are only loading cargo into the cargo pits or are they loading cargo into seats as we've seen some other carriers doing?
