It's been a strategy both NW and Delta have used. I can speak more on the Delta side of things. Post 1970, Delta continues to invest loads of money into upkeeping and renewing older aircraft. I want to say the oldest -88 frame in the fleet now is about to turn 40.

It will be painted and polished for display at the Delta Flight Museum. As cool as it would be to have a flying example, that is simply not going to happen. This may very well be the last DC7B flight ever. :( They keep the DC-3 flightworthy, so keep your fingers crossed they do the same for the DC-7.

UA and AA would be a firm no, UA because infrastructure being nonexistent in JFK and plenty at EWR. AA, thats obvious. Just kind of an off the charts prediction but wouldnt it be cool to see Boeing offer Delta a 797 + 787-9/10 bulk order that they couldnt turn down. Nothing Delta and Boeing hadent done before with the 737/767s.
