Re: Thanksgiving, Turkeys, and Turkish Airlines

I believe it's just a coincidence that the name of the country in English is the same as the name of the bird. Not a coincidence at all. Prior to the colonization of North America and the discovery of what we now call a turkey, the guinea fowl was imported into Europe via the Ottoman Empire as Tuke...

Re: Can IAD cut it for a UA SE Hub?

This is massively overstated. Burke vs. Chantilly moved the airport a bit further out, but it's hardly a 'massive mistake.' You're talking about a net difference of 5-6 miles, as the crow flies, from Downtown DC. Building an airport in Burke would still have been an inferior location to DCA. Remembe...

Re: History question: Baltimore airport

Icelandair was definitely earlier. I remember flying them BWI-LUX non-stop back in 82 or 83 thinking what an unusual routing that was. I cannot remember when they started in the 70s if they flew to Reykjavik or if they started immediately with Luxembourg. LUX on FI was quite popular because they off...

Re: USA-Japan/East Asia) ticket prices plummet? Is there something I'm missing?

This is for a trip I've been planning to take with the family in March 2019. I've been looking almost daily for the past 2 months for flights departing both DEN and the east coast (RIC specifically) to NRT. For the past 2 months the price has been holding steady from between $1500 and $2k between D...

Re: Why did DL/UA cut NRT-JFK-NRT?

First off, I'm not sure if UA ever served JFK-NRT. They do however, serve EWR-NRT. Delta cut it's JFK-NRT route likely so that they can shift their focus to ATL. United took Over the JFK0Nrt Route from Pan Am in 1986 and we moved he route to EWR after the Merger with Continental as they had a Hun i...

Re: Will DL return to HKG again?

It would be interesting to know how much SkyTeam partner, XiamenAir's service from Shenzhen affected the performance of DL's HKG flight. XiamenAir's fares to/from Seattle are dirt cheap, you accrue SkyMiles on them, and I believe many nationalities can get a 5-day Mainland China visa on arrival in ...

A lot of the China POS is Europe bound tourists, SU often has the cheapest fares between China and many European cities.

Re: SilkAir becomes 'Singapore Airlines'

Great move! Much better for us travelers knowing that star benefits will apply to all legs now, like increased baggage allowance. For SQ I think it makes a lot of sense, they are struggling a bit and my impression is that they are no longer a leading airline because they don't have a lot of destinat...

Re: UA 767's and transpac

UA did operate a 763 LHR - DEL - HKG and vv in the late 1990's as part of their RTW service, though technically not a Trans-Pacific flight. and well before the merger with CO UA did try to compete with Northwest and was flying 767s from NRT to SPN and GUM. I do not recall if they flew from NRT to a...

Re: Flights between Luxembourg and America feasible?

IMHO JFK maybe with a 321/757 aircraft. LUX just isn't that big of a market and the dynamics have changed so much since FI did the LUX-KEF-JFK thingy. Dare I say a BBJ with a split J/Y cabin "may" work but with the quick hops to LHR and the others I just don't see LUX-NA as fruit that nee...
