I can confirm thru a couple of reliable sources that it was not a charter nor flight as there were only crew on-board the inbound and outbound flights.

HNL and YVR are set-up as common use gates although some carriers have preferred gates and like to utilize the same gates.

Common use gates are very common thought the USA and Canada. ARINC and SITA are the two biggest providers for the computer systems at these common use gates.

I've had the "customs hold" be a "lobby" hold... deplaned and queued for buses, the line snakes from the plane, across the jetbridge, L1 lobby, up the escalator, L2 lobby. I prefer that to waiting on the plane. Just a wild prediction based of decades of HNL improvement projects....
