Re: Aircraft yokes are an ergonomic disaster

This wasn't intended to be a FBW sidestick vs mechanical yoke discussion (which it has come down to), but rather a acknowledgement that a yoke is a horrible control interface considering that it blocks the instrument panel and hits your/the other pilot's knees.

Re: Aircraft yokes are an ergonomic disaster

I do have a short torso and long legs so that might be some of the trouble. I have to put the seat all the way up which also leads to my shins touching the instrument panel when I'm on the brakes.

Aircraft yokes are an ergonomic disaster

Why are modern aircraft designs still using floor mounted control columns? A column and yoke is about the worst ergonomic design that I can imagine especially with a fly by wire aircraft where a side-stick is feasible. You have to look and reach around the yoke to see and manipulate the instruments....

Do aircraft that rely entirely on spoilers for roll control (no ailerons) still have roll authority when the wing is at a zero lift angle of attack? RE: Usaf Pondering Re-engineing The B-52.....AGAIN

I wonder if the current vertical tail/rudder has enough authority to handle an outboard engine failure? With the current 8 engines if one fails you don't have all that much differential thrust compared to losing a full 40,000lb thrust from an F117.

A B-1B bomber consumes about 250,000 pounds/hour at sea level full afterburner and roughly 20,000 pounds/hour at cruise. Like tom said, there are so many variables that this question is unanswerable without specifics.

A CFM56 will burn about 8-10,000lb/hr on takeoff and 2-3,000lb/hr at cruise.
