Does anybody have information on the operation of the upper deck door on the classic hump of the 747 (not the dual exits on the longer upper deck).

It looks like a small door - was the slide attached inside or deployed in an unusual fashion?

There is very little information to be found online.

Simple question: is it permissable to carry Champagne in hold luggage? I want to bring a nice bottle home from Belfast to London for Christmas and obviously can't take it in my cabin baggage, but wondered if the pressure would create problems if it were in my hold baggage.

In the UK, Cabin crew go through the same security procedures as passengers. It is not uncommon though for crew to go down to the hold and bring checked luggage up to the cabin, especially on long multi-sector days.
