I wish I posted this before buying. The lens is now on E_Bay. I always associated SONY with high qualoity, that's why the lens is such a disappointment. I think I found a decent one, though, the Minolta 100-300 APO, for less than $200, so thanks for the info.

If you are using adobe CS4, there is under the image menu in the adjustments submenu a setting for exposure. If you change the gamma, that should make the types of changes you are looking for with shadows/highlights, but with (I think) without the problems associated with shadow/highlight. looks fin...
