Correct. When a tire blows, it BLOWS, with force. You'd be able to see the ripped rubber in the picture, and the flat tires would look much worse than they actually do. This definitely looks more like a slow plug deflation for safety.

Brilliant idea!

I assume they slide the pipes through the emergency passenger door in the rear pressure bulkhead. The little door must be positioned just high enough to allow the pipes to slide through parallel with the fuselage.

From the picture, it looks like he was flying a Cessna of some kind. Good job landing it in the dark.

On a side note, I wonder what might have happened if the aircraft had been fitted with a ballistic recovery system. Would you have advised him to try landing himself, or just rip the chute?
