Re: One-big-airport nations

Denmark is odd. It has one big hub (CPH) which is all the way at the edge of the country near the Swedish border. Due to it's location it's inconvenient for anyone outside Copenhagen. You have to cross the city to get to the airport. The airports outside CPH are much smaller, BLL only having a fract...

Transportation of Formula 1 race cars

I just had this discussion with a friend of mine about the whole Formula 1 circus. It strikes down in a different part of the world for every race. No doubt the way to get the race cars and all of it's equipment and staff from one place to another is by plane, but how exactly does that work? Do the ...

DY starts a base at BLL

https://standbynordic.com/norwegian-opens-base-at-billund/ DY is basing one single 737 in BLL. They will start routes to AGP, PMI, PDL and FAO. This is good news for BLL, but I wonder why no route to IBZ. No airline flies BLL-IBZ and it is a very much wanted destination. Now you have to get all the ...

Many years ago I made the mistake of going to Thailand in the summer vacation. We saw nothing but rain for the whole week we were there, it was so wet that it was even raining inside our hotel room. We didn't once go out, the streets had literally become rivers. The whole land was flooded and still ...

This is impressive. I am not too familiar with the geography of the Netherlands, but it seems like the country can really use a second big airport. I wish that was true for my country as well. CPH is the big airport of course, but all the way at the outskirts of the country far away from where I liv...

Honestly I really wish LOT success in BUD but without “extensive” network you can not fill the wide body airplane like 787. Yeah a terminal change would be a real hassle. I was flying AF YYZ-CDG-DKR and it was all in terminal 2. The key to managing the language barrier is to try a little French. Once they discover that you aren't an arrogant Anglophone you'll find Francophones much easier to communicate with. So then I ...

Re: Why such short runways in the UK and Ireland

I think there's some kind of difference in attitude. The British might think "as long as it works" while the Europeans are more like "be prepared for the future". I think that too. Build it before you need it or build it after you need it. I am surprised to see SNN with just 319...

I have calculated the average length of the longest runway for a number of European countries, looking at all airports with commercial airline service that means anything. Where do you think that they could possibly fly profitably? CPH-JNB or CPH-CPT. The market between Scandinavia and South Africa is huge and CPH is a hub. With the right amount of feed CPH is not just CPH, it's everywhere in Europe. There is no way they can yet fly from BCN or FCO to Asia. They don'...

It's probably a bit extreme to say that KLM is mismanaged, but they certainly aren't great. The cabins are dated, the 737s are nasty, the flight attendants are "cold". They could certainly learn a thing or two about hospitality from Air France. The only real plus KLM has over Air France i...
