Put it this way - if they hadn't bought back any stock in those years - they would have had close to $100B in cash on the balance sheet. Would that have been a good idea? It could have come in handy with what subsequently happened - but they had no real need to keep it and didn't indebt the company...

I think Airbus has been remarkably effective at holding airlines to the letter of the law and getting them to accept delivery on aircraft they'd much rather defer, which presumably is what helps give them the confidence to boost production to such high levels.
