I believe that the flights that show MD88/90s after June 1st have the wrong equipment information, and I also believe that Delta is in the process of fixing this. They are running simulations based upon projected market conditions and they have a lot of variables to include in these studies. The one M88 that is already stored at BHM is N973DL, which is the one that was supposedly hit by a luggage cart at BHM the other week. Guess that was an easy one to send to retirement and write off. I can see how it's argued that an MD-88 with time left in it before 1/1/21 is 'wasted,' but there's the question of fuel burn. If anything, I'd see MD-88s subbing for half-full 757s on short routes like DTW-MCO, ATL-MCO, etc. As for the 717s, this looks like a time for more planes with a lower trip...
