You have to look close sometimes to see differences, but not so much on the 787. Yeah you can look at it for two seconds and say looks like another widebody, twin engine, boring aircraft again. Well the reason for the same design is because right now that is the most efficient thing Boeing can do. There will be a different shape eventually, but right now the smart thing to do is to squeeze every bit of efficiency out of the tube and wing design.

Well I see 50 years from now higher and faster flight. Eventually point to point sub-orbital spaceflight will no longer be a $200 thousand theme park ride and instead will be a means of travel that everyone can afford. This will force a change in aircraft design, but until then, I think we will stay...

I am a fan of all of the Embraer products. I have yet to fly on an E-Jet though. I have flown on the right side of the plane in a 145 and that was a bit tough.
However, I was on an American Eagle 135, on the left side with the single seat. It was the most comfortable flight I have had so far.
