If they select the A321neo for KLM, the gap with KLC's E2s is indeed quite substantial. Is this where the A220 comes along? The E2s are leased for ten years if I recall, so that might work to replace them then with new A220-100s. Oh dear, the first E2's have arrived only this year, and the next one...
