i heard somwhere that this is going to be taken into consideration.. the people in the space station have an emergency shuttle craft there in order to come back to earth, if nasa were to stop all launches, which would cut off all supplies to the space station.

it is weird but if u look closely at both pictures posted above, only the airbirdges on the side of the airport are long... this is simply because the gate happens to be on that side and if u look closely that is the closest way of having it without mixing gate sections.
