Just curious -- when a aircraft needs to divert to a airport which significantly detours from the planned flight route (e.g. the recent UA EWR-HKG that had to divert to Goose Bay, or planes that had to turn back in the middle of the Atlantic during 9/11), how is this handled from a ATC perspective? ...

Can't any airline just file a flight plan with say, Amman Jordan as the final destination and then once over Jordanian airspace, change the plan to Israel? That sounds like a convenient way to get around overflight restrictions.

AF uses a A380, <acronym title="Cathay Pacific (China-Hong Kong)">CX</acronym> uses a B77W. The route <acronym title="Air France">AF</acronym> takes goes over the Himalayas and requires a 4 engine aircraft. In the event of a engine failure, a twinjet would descend too low to safely clear the terrain.

Anyone know if they did voice stress analysis on the ATC recording, especially the time of the second Flight Level 350 checkin? That would give some clues to if it's the same speaker, if he was speaking under duress, etc.
