The only "ethical" requests I've upheld are for paying clients that I've worked with. If they hire me to photograph their private jets (and they have), I don't publish those photos elsewhere. Sometimes I use them on my personal portfolio pages, but the identifiers have been edited out of t...
Jump to postFull Frame is where the weight of the market is going. The a6600 is a perfectly fine camera, but the a7 mark 4 is due pretty soo. The a7III is still good, but its replacement is likely to land around summertime.
Jump to postThe RX10 series (particularly the IV) is a fine camera, it can do a lot and has good image quality. Its AF is also excellent, but it has one downside: You can't focus while zooming. The zoom motor is also not the quickest to go from one extreme to the other. But in terms of features, it's largely eq...
Jump to postFirst thing I would do is test the lens against subjects that aren't moving at both near and far distance. Try to take motion blur and subject movement out of the equation. It's still possible to get a mediocre example of a lens, or one that's weaker at different subject distances. Copy to copy vari...
Jump to postIt's entirely possible that you got a bum copy of the lens (it happens even with the spendy ones). What kind of conditions were you dealing with? Don't forget atmosphere plays a lot with very long reach. Do you have any image samples you can share? Does it look like focus problems, or is it issues o...
Jump to postPeople here know I'm critical of Canon, but these cameras by and large appear to be the real deal. Even if they dragged their feet towards making them, they did exactly what they had to do in terms of features/capabilities. They took their lumps and responded to criticism in the right way, by making...
Jump to postVideo heads are very different than photo heads.
What's your budget looking like? A light camcorder doesn't need super heavy legs but you can get a lot of tripod that will last for a very long time for $300.
It could also be an opportunity for a "Viewer's Choice" voted on by the photo-viewing public. That's called "Top 5 of the last 24 hours" ;) Most-viewed photos would automatically receive the most votes. Besides it gives an unfair advantage to the photos promoted by A.net on Face...
Jump to postIf PC voting does not attract a lot of votes every day and is subject to manipulation, then it might be time to do away with having the photographers select PC and replacing it with stand out shots selected by the screeners during the screening process. Other option could be for screeners to tag st...
Jump to postMy biggest criticism is how the EVF freezes momentarily while the shutter opens; it's not too much of an issue when you're not holding your finger on the trigger but it makes the 'spray and pray' approach for fast subjects more difficult. I know some mirrorless cameras (Sony) don't suffer from this...
Jump to postThe Sony RX10 series (especially the latest model) is perfectly capable of doing action, continuous AF and drive. It uses the a9's high-speed shutter and on-sensor AF, just in a smaller sensor. It has an excellent lens that performs very well at 600mm equivalent. The only gotchas are the motorized z...
Jump to postDepends on how much money you want to spend. Nikon still sells Coolscan slide scanners, but you're going to be paying a lot for one. Minolta scanners will still run on Win7, if you can find one. There's plenty on eBay. Refer to this Dyxum thread. https://www.dyxum.com/dforum/how-to-run-old-minolta-s...
Jump to postI only fly WN out of BOS if they're going to a place that B6 doesn't go, and if the calculus of their fare with two bags is cheaper than Delta. With their recent scheduling shenanigans (not surprised they're killing MKE given the awful schedule) and the cutbacks, the desire just goes down and down.
Jump to postNo, there are two modes for continuous AF on the EOS R. One is shooting speed priority AF at 5 fps, then there is accuracy priority AF, at 3 fps. It works with both RF and EF lenses. The only difference between RF and EF lenses for the EOS R is that with RF lenses, you also have the option of high ...
Jump to postAnd yes, adaptors aren't perfect, but they're A. not as necessary anymore and B. Every firmware update (from both Sony and Metabones) has improved them. Obviously native lenses perform the best, but I'm still shocked at how well the adaptors work given constraints. But those same arguments cut both...
Jump to postKarl, They have little to offer outside a 24-70 under 100mm. People still posting FUD like "Sony's lineup is still small" in 2019 is hilarious. It's not 2014 anymore. The holes are niche and are being filled in year over year. Of course regular EOS has more lenses, but it's been around fo...
Jump to postI make prints nowadays, and there's only so much a 96 DPI monitor can show. Sometimes, density is a good thing. Looking at a proper photo on a retina screen or even just making a reasonable print can make even an average photo look nicer. Living the 42 MP life and haven't looked back in two years.
Jump to postclickhappy wrote:Dan - I went with the LG 34BK95U-W 34" 21:9 UltraWide 5K2K WUHD Nano IPS Monitor. Whatever that means![]()
Which 5K monitor are you looking at? There's several, and the opinion is different depending on the one you choose.
Most of the Ultrawide 5Ks have densities similar to 1440p monitors, so it shouldn't be too hard to keep in line in terms of what resolution is being expected.
Right now I'd say there's nothing wrong with holding out a little bit to see where the EOS R system goes. You could try picking up a less expensive used 5D mark4 and then just sell it again when you're ready to move on. I don't think you'll be missing much by waiting a year. If you were to divest of...
Jump to postI would really suggest you try a metabones before you write off adapting. I know lots of people that use them with great success, especially on the mark 3 bodies. I know the rental shops usually carry them.
I actually don't know what you have for a lens collection these days. What's in your stable?
The a7ii is not on the same level as the mark 3 bodies, and I would avoid it except as a backup. On a final note, am I right in thinking that the A7III doesn't have a fully articulating screen? I believe it only flips up 180 degrees? This is where Canon is winning, with it's articulating touchscreen...
Jump to postD'oh, yes, I forgot that with an EVF it's always LV! Just to clarify, are you saying that, in your experience, DSLRs such as the 7DII and 5DIV can't compete AF-wise with the A7III? Or were you referring to the EOS R cameras? I have an 80D but rarely use it so can't really vouch for it's AF competen...
Jump to postThanks Dan. Is it dual pixel outside LV? I already have a 6D but it's not the best at maintaining focus lock in AI servo, especially if you zoom in or out. The issue is compounded by very bright light, which is what made me assume that the AF points were contrast detect. In low light, however, the ...
Jump to postThe EOS RP uses Dual Pixel AF, and its continuous frame rate with continuous focus with it is rather abysmal compared to its contemporaries. It's a bigger advantage for video than stills. It's a mirrorless 6D in functionality and features. AF will be more accurate (that is, when it locks focus it'll...
Jump to postSony, Olympus, and Fuji are the choices to make right now. RF mount and Z mount just aren't there yet, but that situation will change over the next few years.
Jump to postIt can get bad at Logan at times, nowhere near the insane times MCO hits though. Example: The regular security line at Terminal C at Logan Airport last Friday before Memorial Day weekend went all the way through the normal area, past the JetBlue check-in kiosks, all the way to the Burger King at th...
Jump to postI'm in the middle of revamping my analysis to a daily version because the difference in days is quite startling as to the usage, the only piece i won't be picking up is the B6 usage for domestic departures from those gates. Fun fact, on my recent departure to MCO, I was listening in to a B6 pilot t...
Jump to postI was stuck waiting for the bridge recently (after arriving on a red-eye from LAX, sigh), because I always use the PreFlight parking facility when I park at the airport. It didn't feel that long. I think they remodeled the bridge recently to speed up the process. Still, that process should be banne...
Jump to postI completely agree with Riverside. The space is already used as a pick-up/drop-off point for some buses, but turning that area into a major transportation hub would make excellent sense. Here's the challenges: the parking lot there is already full from weekday Green Line commuters. The MBTA recentl...
Jump to postThe problem with the Watertown mall is that buses would have to backtrack 10-15mins to get to the mass pike or drive on crowded residential streets to get to the airport. Don’t get me wrong Watertown itself could definitely use better service to the airport but having people go from neighboring tow...
Jump to postFor an airport that’s one of the most convenient geographically to the city it’s a shame how much of a hassle it is to access conveniently and affordably. For many of us ride sharing was the one salvation in that issue but it sounds like that might be ending soon. How about some Logan express servi...
Jump to postI work at one of the local TV stations in Boston, and as someone who uses the airport quite often for personal trips (via Logan Express), I've been playing email tag with Massport PR officials. The #1 goal of Massport is to move people away from using ride-sharing and getting them to use public tra...
Jump to postI'm actually curious how the Central Parking pickup scheme will work in practice. Are you going to be the guinea pig? :D I am going to stick to curbside drop-off/pick-up by whatever means necessary. Really hope people won't get mugged at night in some dark corner of the central parking structure......
Jump to postThe pickup fee isn't going up, the drop-off fee will match the pickup fee at 3.25 and there's a 1.50 discount for carpooled rideshares. I also think this includes the fix for the recirculation problem that they had by allowing those that just dropped off pax to pick up at the same time without going...
Jump to postThe terminal roadways of an airport are a shared resource and need to be managed as such, otherwise we have a tragedy of the commons. I do use Lyft when I'm at airports (but not at BOS), and it puts the stark difference of the design of some airport roadways in focus. People want the convenience of ...
Jump to postPanning technique is the same regardless of what equipment you use. Sony is still a minority within this community, so what you're seeing is simply a matter of numbers, not that it cannot be done. I assume you're handholding and you're keeping steadyshot on and using a lens that allows for hybrid st...
Jump to postI do not know much about Woburn Express etc. but my colleagues who live in the burbs like Hopkinton etc. complain it is not easy for folks who have a compelling reason to take the first flight in and out of the city or having to take the last flight. Jump to postWay back in the day when I lived in Wakefield I used to take the commuter rail to N.station then either taxi or subway to the airport but that's because I had a pass so it cost me nothing :) I would love to be able to do that today but the commuter rail from this far out is painfully slow and expen...
Jump to postI'm a Merrimack Valley resident living just steps from the commuter rail and I've never once taken the commuter rail to the airport. Woburn Express is my preferred option for long trips but I've also used Preflight in Chelsea, Lyft, or wife's drop-off/pick-up, all depending on the circumstances. A ...
Jump to post9. Commuter Rail/Other Lines - North Station sucks for connections to Logan, basically if you come in from say Lowell, you have to drive to the station, park (or pay for a lyft etc. ) get on the train, get to NS, swap to Orange/Green, then Blue out to the airport, then bus to the terminal. Woburn L...
Jump to postWhat time of April? It's probably an April school vacation week special.
Jump to postTrue, but they might be useful for Rectrix unless Massport is going to let them use Gate 4 as a walkdown gate rather than a jetbridge. Ramp space will likely be at a premium with all four jetways installed. It's possible that they could stripe things in such a way that 5 and 6 could be used if 4 is...
Jump to postI think i have found the answer to part of the reason on the long lead time for the DL DTW flight. http://www.massport.com/capitalprogramsattachments/W283-C1/W283-C1.pdf Massport awarded a bid for $249k for the building of 2 more jet bridges for Gates 3 and 4 (I am sure 3 will most likely be for DL...
Jump to postAlso, having ORH as capable of taking RJ/A320/B737 sized diverts isn't something to ignore. With the Cat-III landing system in place, ORH is at least capable of playing defense in bad weather now versus shoving its hands up in the air. A B6 gate agent told me that a bunch of BOS-bound travelers wou...
Jump to postI have no more qualification to speculate than most posters here, but here's my two cents, for what they're worth. One wonders if that wasn't some of the reason why it's such a long lead time. I am sure DL would want their own branding up there. it kind of makes sense if that was the case, as like o...
Jump to postThe temperature I got from the early-risers that were on the JFK flight is that they were all locals. Bunch of people making connections, and many going to New York directly. I have a hunch that if there was regular Inland Route Amtrak service that the people going to NY directly would have taken th...
Jump to postSo, flew out of ORH this weekend. Both the AA PHL and B6 JFK flight were departing so the terminal was pretty hopping. I hadn't been past upstairs security at ORH before, and it was neat to see the area that was the two unused jetway gates. My flights were on-time (even arrived a little early on Sun...
Jump to postI'll be flying out of ORH to JFK on B6 for the first time next month. Mostly as a curiosity (I've flown from the airport before in a GA context). The fare was $100 RT for a weekend trip. I wonder what the loads have been like. Did you take the flight yet? If so how was it? Departing this Saturday. ...
Jump to postDo you mean the RX10 IV? If so, yes, it's a perfectly good single lens camera. You can't change focus while zooming, otherwise the AF is very snappy and the IQ is good for good-light situations. It can keep up well with its 20FPS frame rate.
