Re: Philadelphia Aviation Thread - 2022

Landed 27L this afternoon which is a new one for me…even the pilots commented that it was pretty rare. Anyone know why they’d run in this configuration? My theories are that there’s less conflict with landing 17 (which I also observed), or something about the longer available length due to the heat...

Re: Philadelphia Aviation Thread - 2021

The cargo expansion is not going on the economy lot. I believe it’s earlier in this thread, but it’s going west of de ice and north of taxiway S so it’s adjacent to current cargo city. I was told the economy lot closure is to accommodate construction equipment entering/exiting the airfield for that ...

I've seen in prior PHL Master Plans a proposal to extend this runway to full-length (>7K-8K ft) to allow mainline runway usage. Is that still in the works? Unsafe flying over for people in the terminal. It can be disastrous if take off or landing crash error stall or microburst or engine stall to k...

Re: PHL runway 8

All good until a private jet over runs and blocks 17/35 when a passenger jet is taking off or landing. As said before, this is ludicrous. The 26 RSA extends through Rwy 35 and even to Twy E on the west side of 35. During a 26 landing both 35 and Twy E are treated as if they intersect the runway unt...

Don't need a tug when the thing can only actually be parked in one spot on the entire airport, and essentially only taxi on two taxiways.

Re: Philadelphia Aviation Thread - 2019

General question, how many widebody gates does PHL have? Also is there any widebody gates outside of terminal A? I’m not entirely sure about this but I was watching a YouTube video with a US B762 that sure looks like it’s at gate B11. https://youtu.be/wSfR0G89cT0 It's hard to tell from that video. ...

UPS has had the B748 at PHL at least 3 times now. I've seen it on UPS2194 Friday afternoons 2/8, 2/15 and 3/1. It always departs that night back to SDF at 10:15pm (forget the flight number but that's the proposed time for the flight plan). As noted the 2/22 UPS2194 was a B744 but stayed until Sunday...

Re: Philadelphia Aviation Thread - 2019

PHL is definitely not capable of support regular A380s. They're only barely able to handle diversions, and that's only using 27L/9R and parking at the hard stand near de-ice. Three weeks ago EK diverted one of their JFK A380s here and it was a giant cluster.

Currently I see 9L/27R as 9,500ft, does 1,000 ft make a difference for airliners needing extra runway? Re: Philadelphia route expansion?

The 27L/9R extension to 12,000ft just opened at the end of July. Service to Asia is imminent. What is it about a 12,000ft runway that makes service imminent? Boston only has a 10,000 ft runway and has had no issue attracting flights to Asia. And PHL is only 50-100nm further than BOS to NRT, PEK, an...

Unless you're in Essington/Tinicum I highly doubt it would cause any appreciable noise increase since 27R departures are only about 1500 feet farther north than a 27R departure. Sorry but I am going to have to disagree with this. The difference is pretty substantial in Ridley Park. 1500 feet is ove...

Was AA PHL-JFK really meant to be 6x daily? The route was announced recently but it hasn’t actually even started operating yet! I’m thinking it was either a mis file or some move to hold slots. Generally speaking yes, but not necessarily. If the wind is light we may not bother. As I said it's generally supposed to be reserved for arrival pushes only as working a lot of departures at 27R is more difficult. Depending on the wind we may land 27R and the Liberty Visual 27L approach.

There have been no changes to departures in any way. 27R departures are part of a relatively new operation to land 27L and 17 during southerly winds rather than trying to force landing 35 in a tailwind all the time.

I assume you're using the height of the AA Ramp Control Tower which has absolutely nothing to do with ATC.
